"Science" शब्द की उत्पत्ति लैटिन (Latin) भाषा से हुई है। इसका मूल शब्द है "scientia", जिसका अर्थ होता है — ज्ञान या जानना। यह "scire" क्रिया से निकला है, जिसका मतलब है जानना या समझना। प्राचीन समय में यह शब्द सिर्फ प्रयोग और शोध के लिए नहीं, बल्कि हर प्रकार के व्यवस्थित ज्ञान के लिए प्रयोग होता था।
