  Origin and Meaning of the Word “ Science ” When we hear the word “Science”, our mind often pictures laboratories , research, instruments, and new discoveries. But have you ever wondered where this word came from and what its true meaning is? Roots of the Word The word “Science” has its origin in the Latin language . Its root word is “ scientia ”, which means knowledge or to know. It comes from the verb “ scire ”, meaning to know or to understand. In ancient times, this word was not limited to experiments and research—it referred to all forms of systematic knowledge. Evolution of the Meaning In the beginning, “science” meant the organized understanding of any subject—whether it was nature, mathematics, or philosophy. But in the 17th and 18th centuries, during the Scientific Revolution in Europe, the word began to be used mainly for the systematic study of the natural and physical world.
